Guest blog for Leslie Tate

other blog

Last March, fellow writer Leslie Tate invited me to write a guest post for his blog about growing up Deaf and becoming a writer and artist.

The resulting post was well-received, and can be viewed here – Melissa’s Story: a Deaf Identity Reclaimed

Three years ago this week, we went into lockdown for the first time. I didn’t get selected in the first judging round for this year’s @royalacademyarts Summer Exhibition. Family breakfast ‘72 (2023). Still thinking about whether it’s finished, given there’s one more person in the original photo that I haven’t added yet - me. I’m on the left. Been a while since I last did a time lapse! Working this time on the background for ‘Family breakfast ‘72’ (2023). Enjoy. And here’s the man himself! @48esteban @deaf_mosaic 👏👏 Today, at the @britishdeafassociation Conference, on the other side of the Thames, history is being made with the creation of a BSL Advisory Group to help steer the roll-out of the 2022 BSL Act. Family breakfast c.‘72 (2023). Getting there… Family breakfast in ‘72 (2023). Starting a new drawing, of a photograph of my family taken in c. 1972.
