For over twenty years, I have enjoyed a portfolio career, taking on a wide range of roles for Tate, V&A, Shape, Maverick Television/Resource Base, Modern Art Oxford, Deafworks, Deafinitely Theatre (as a trainee), Architecture Week South-East and the Wallace Collection.
Before I had children, for five years I led a groundbreaking Deaf visual art project, Salon, funded by Arts Council England and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, and had journalism published in Vogue, Esquire, The Observer, The Independent, BLOOM, British Deaf News and Disability Arts Online among many others.
As a parent-carer of two and domestic abuse survivor I have adjusted my focus on empowering others through my work since – particularly Deaf women, parents and Deaf people with mental health issues.
In 2014 I published my first Kindle book, My Daughter and I, which can be downloaded via the Amazon store here, and released the acclaimed 27′ documentary listen, even when your heart is crying, produced by Neath Films in association with the BSLBT. The film was Official Selection for Aesthetica Short Film Festival in 2015, and won a Best Documentary nomination in the CINEDEAF Awards of the same year. It can still be viewed on the BSL Zone.
Also across 2015 I appeared as a panellist at Women of the World Festival (WOW) at Southbank Centre, annual conferences organised by Women’s Aid and NHS Safeguarding, and presented in BSL for Heathlands School and DeafHope. The following year, I gave a BSL presentation at the British Society of Mental Health and Deafness’ annual conference.
More recently, I collaborated with DeafHope survivors as part of Statements in Semaphore, an art project led by Susan Merrick funded by Arts Council England. The resulting effigies appeared in an exhibition, A Series of Events Part I, at Platform 1 Gallery in Wandsworth Common, along with two pieces created by myself – Reaching (2018), a 3D house model, and the ink drawing Selfie (2018).
